Long form
Kayla Collingwood is a New Zealand-born contralto singer, educator, and creator based in Paris, France.
Kayla's passion for classical vocal music was ignited as a teenager when she first encountered opera through New Zealand Opera's production of Jenůfa. She later joined the Freemasons New Zealand Opera Chorus and made her professional debut in 2016 as the Third Boy in the company's mainstage production of The Magic Flute. That same year, she was a finalist in the Napier Aria and NZ Aria competitions and was awarded the Anne Bellam Scholarship. She holds a Master of Music in Classical Voice from the University of Auckland and a Graduate Certificate in Theatre Studies from the University of Waikato.
Since relocating to Europe in 2017, Kayla has cultivated a multifaceted freelance career, performing in recital, oratorio, opera, and events, including premieres of works by contemporary composers. She is known for her rich contralto voice and distinctive artistic presence. Her close work with private tutors and coaches in Paris, London, and beyond led to a transition from mezzo-soprano to contralto in 2022, and championing the repertoire, history, and visibility of this rare and often-misunderstood voice type has become one of her core passions.
Alongside her performance career, Kayla is committed to deepening engagement with voice and music through teaching and creative practice. She runs a growing private studio in Paris and online, offering 1:1 lessons, workshops, and group classes for adults and children across three teaching streams: singing, voice and stagecraft for wellbeing, and classical music immersion/éveil musical. Her work is rooted in vocal anatomy and a trauma-informed approach, guiding students back to a deep, confident relationship with their voice. She is also the founder of Sound Garden: Classical Music Immersion, an initiative helping people engage with classical music through playlists, curated content, and more.
At the heart of her work is a single call: let your voice be heard.
