English-Speaking Vocal Coach in Paris: Technique, Performance and Everything In Between

I'm Kayla Collingwood, a classical contralto singer and voice teacher/vocal coach based in Paris. I work with singers across classical, musical theatre and contemporary commercial styles, and my approach covers both the technical side of singing and the performance side.
Whether you're preparing for a "stage", a conservatoire or drama school audition, working towards a role, building a set for a gig or competition, or simply want singing lessons in Paris that don't skip over the fundamentals, you're in the right place.
My Teaching Method
My work is grounded in vocal anatomy and current voice science. Technique and expression are intertwined in my lessons. Technique opens up expressive options you wouldn't otherwise have. Expression, in turn, helps decide which technical approach to use, since knowing what you want a phrase to do often points to the easiest way to sing it. We'll focus on each more at different points, but we always bring them back together.
This applies whether you're working on operatic or classical repertoire, a musical theatre audition piece, or a contemporary commercial set.
Why I Lead With "Voice Teacher"
You may have found this page by searching "vocal coach Paris", so let me clarify. I market myself primarily as a voice teacher, even though I do both teaching and coaching, for two main reasons.
The first is where my priorities sit. Function comes first for me, always. Before we talk about style or interpretation, the coordination of the voice needs to be stable. Without that foundation, the voice tires quickly and can't express what you actually want it to. Once it's in place, we move between technique and expression far more easily.
The second is more practical. A lot of vocal coaching happens at the piano, working through repertoire together in real time. I can accompany lessons with basic chords and by playing vocal lines, but I'm not a professional pianist in the way a dedicated coach would be, and I can't sightread a full Sondheim excerpt!
To summarise: if you want interpretation, language, role preparation and overall musicianship support, this is part of our work together. If you want an expert pianist to make sure every musical detail is in place, then there are others who are much more skilled
than I am in that area.
Who I Work With
My students include classical singers, musical theatre performers, and singers preparing for professional auditions, festivals, gigs, recordings, and other performances. Many are based in Paris and prefer lessons in English, whether that's because they're an expat, a native English speaker, or simply find technical work easier to follow in their first language. I also have students online, and even some who travel from elsewhere.
